A red, 400Kg bumper car is moving to the right at 2m/s. The red bumper car collides head on with a blue bumper car with a combined driver/car mass of 600kg and a velocity of 1m/s. The collision was elastic. If the blue car bounced backwards at a velocity of 0.25m/s, what was the final velocity of the red car?

The principle of conservation of linear momentum states that; the total mometum before collsion is equal to the total momentum after collision.

Now;

m1u1 + m2u2 = m2v2 + m2v2

(400Kg * 2m/s) + (600kg *  1m/s) = (600kg * 0.25m/s) + (400Kg * v)

800 + 600 = 150 + 400v

800 + 600 - 150 =  400v

v = 800 + 600 - 150/400

v = 3.1 m/s
