What is altruism?

Altruism refers to a phenomenon in which a living organism promotes the welfare and comfortability of another organism, especially at his or her own disadvantage or detriment.

This ultimately implies that, altruism is an act through which a living organism show selfness, love, care, affection and concern towards another organism's ordeal (predicament), even at a risk or excessive cost to himself or herself.
