In the "Gift of the Magi", it revolves around husband and wife, Delilah and Jim, if I remember correctly. The irony was that Delilah cut her hair in order to buy a pocket watch chain for Jim, and Jim sold his pocket watch to buy haircombs for her. The haircombs are now useless considering the fact that Delilah now has short hair and the same goes for the pocket watch chain since Jim sold his pocket watch for her gift.

The best explanation of  how the ending of "The Gift of the Magi"is ironic is:

  • Delilah cut her hair so she could buy her husband Jim a watch and Jim sold his watch to buy hair combs for Delilah who had already cut off her hair.
