Twins develop when a single fertilized egg splits and develops into two fetuses. After 8-12 days embryonic layers that split to form monozygotic twins start to develop into organs and structures. Some thingk that if the embryo does not split 8-12 days after conception, the separation stops before completion of the process which results into conjoined twins. Another theory is that two separate embryos may fuse together during early development. There are many different kinds of conjoined twins. Thoracopagus is the most common.
