Thomas Robert Malthus was a British economist and demographer who was born on February 13/14, 1766, in Rookery, close to Dorking, Surrey, and died on December 29, 1834, in St. Catherine, close to Bath, Somerset. He was raised in a wealthy household and attended the University of Cambridge before being chosen as a member of Jesus College in 1793. An Essay on the Principle of Population, which he published in 1798, made the case that population will always have a tendency to outpace food supplies and that, if left unchecked, population growth will follow a geometrical progression while increases in subsistence levels will only follow an arithmetical progression. according to him, starvation, conflict, and poor health would keep the population from rising over the point of survival. In later stages of his work, he expanded on these ideas (to 1826). He suggested that because they tend to promote the creation of an excessive population, welfare programs for the needy should be severely regulated. Despite being thoroughly refuted, his beliefs had a significant impact on modern social policy and economists like David Ricardo.
