The Walker family and the Goodman family are going to the cinema. The Walkers pay £22 for 2 adult tickets and 1 child ticket. The Goodmans pay £26 for 1 adult ticket and 3 child tickets. How much does a child's ticket cost?

x = adult, y = child
2x + y = 22  (1)
x + 3y = 26  (2)

(2) * -2 =      -2x - 6y = -52   (3)
(1) + (3)=  the 2x and -2x cancel out leaving -6y+y = -5y and -52+22 = -30
-5y = -30
y = 6

Childs ticket is 6 pounds
