In the short story “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain, one of the characters is told about a man named Jim Smiley. Smiley used to train animals to win competitions and fights in order to make some money.

After catching a frog, Smiley trains it for some time so that it can jump higher than any other frog in the county. After having someone bet against him - and certain that he would win -, Smiley leaves his own frog with the stranger and goes away to catch a frog to compete with his.
