There are 32 pupils in Mr Patel's class. There are 18 girls and 14 boys. All the pupils took a Maths test. The mean score for the girls was 79%. The mean score for the boys was 83%. Work out the mean score for the whole class.​

The mean score for the whole of Mr. Patel's class is; 80.75%

The mean score for the whole class can be evaluated as follows;

For girls;

  • 79 × 18 = 1422

  • The algebraic sum of all girls score is therefore; 1422.

For boys;

  • 83 × 14 = 1162

  • The algebraic sum of all girls score is therefore; 1162.

The total score of all students is therefore; 1422 + 1162 = 2584.

The mean score of the whole class is therefore; 2584/32 = 80.75.
