In literature, the term "conflict" refers to a problem that a character or a group of characters must face.
We can comprehensively cite these types of conflicts. Are they:
- Internal Conflict: Refers to the character's problems with their own thoughts and emotions. In this case, the character is confused with himself.
- External conflict: Refers to problems the character has with elements that are not part of his mind. These elements are physical elements that are "outside" of the character.
This kind of conflict can be subdivided even more specifically. So we have the following types of conflict:
- Character versus self: Refers to the character struggling with his own thoughts, emotions, doubts, and convictions.
- Character versus character: Refers to an established problem between two characters, where they must "fight" each other.
- Character versus nature: Occurs when the character must face the force of nature to achieve a goal.
- Character versus society: Occurs when the character must face a group of people who disagree with him or her for some reason.
An example of internal conflict can be seen in "Hamlet" where the protagonist has many doubts about what he should do and how he should deal with his thoughts.
