So you have your problem:
(1 + 4a) + (5 + 3x)
What you'll want to do first is rearrange the problem:
(4a + 1) + (3x + 5)
Then, you'll eliminate the parenthesis:
4a + 1 + 3x + 5
Now you add all 'like terms' together:
4a + 6 + 3x
Last, is you rearrange again:
4a + 3x + 6
