where oxygen is plentiful, oxygen easily binds to the first subunit and then quickly fills up the remaining ones. Then, as blood circulates through the body, the oxygen level drops while that of carbon dioxide increases. In this environment, hemoglobin releases its bound oxygen.

Haemoglobin is the blood protein that is used to carry oxygen in our body and gives blood its red colour. The ability of this protein to carry oxygen depends on some factor. These factors include:
- Decreased pH: Upon the production of carbondioxide in the tissue cells, carbonic acid is produced which leads to decrease in pH of the blood.
- Exercise: During exercise, the temperature of muscle increases secondary to its utilisation. This will cause the release of unloading of oxygen from haemoglobin.
Therefore, conditions that prompt hemoglobin to release oxygen are decrease in pH (high acidity) and exercise.
