Because the Constitution as written is a pretty well written and well thought out document. It should be hard to change so that some radical (who also controls both chambers of Congress with veto proof margins) can not come in and change it on a whim. 

The logic being that IF the situation has significantly changed that enough of the people would recognize it and agree to the Amendment. 

The Framers knew social environments would change, thus changing the people. So for the constitution to mirror the people of U.S, new amendments would need to be introduced. The Framers made amending the Constitution very difficult because they wanted all changes implemented in the Constitution to be very serious. In addition, they wanted to ensure that the mass majority, if not all, Americans wanted such an amendment. -- This was my answer. I hope it helps
