Respuesta :

Throughout part 3 Farquhar begins to remember his family and think about how he lived before facing Union soldiers. This shows that Farquhar started to think about things beyond the war.

We can arrive at this answer because:

  • Farquhar is a Confederate. He strongly supports the cause championed by the southerners and thinks constantly about the war and how the Union must be defeated.
  • He tends to think that to defend the Confederacy, he must risk his own life, not caring about anything else.
  • For this reason, he decides to make a big attack on the Union army.
  • This attack fails, he is arrested and sentenced to hanging. However, the rope around his neck breaks and he manages to flee.

The third part of the story starts after he ran away and at that point, he starts thinking about his family and how valuable life is. He continues to support the confederation, but more rationally.
