How Waverly deals with the conflict:

The main conflict in the story is between the main character, Waverly, and her mother. Waverly has learned how to play chess and become a champion, and her mother shows her around, even to strangers on the street.

Because of that, Waverly reacts badly at first. She offends her mother and then runs away:

"I raced down the street, dashing between people, not looking back as my mother screamed shrilly, "Meimei! Meimei!""

What the outcome is:

The conflict helps her grow and mature. She comes back home and decides to be more careful in her relationship with her mother, whom she sees as her enemy. She begins to plan her everyone move:

"Her black men advanced across the plane, slowly marching to each successive level as a single unit. My white pieces screamed as they scurried and fell off the board one by one."

What happens in "Rules of the Game"

  • The main character, Waverly, is a young girl, daughter of Chinese parents. As an American girl, Waverly's ideas and cultural values differ from her parents', especially her mother.

  • Waverly learns to play chess, but she feels that her mother keeps on interfering with the activity. It is as if her mother is ruining all the fun for her.
