The North was generally "Free-Soil." This meant that they supported the idea of wage-labor versus slavery; also they opposed the spread of slavery into Western territories, The North was very industrial.
The South's economy was based on slavery. Southern men believed that it was essential to their liberty to maintain slaves. The South had very little industry and was almost entirely an agrarian region.
The Western Territories were fought over between the North and the South for influence (whether or not they could bring slaves with them as settlers. Look into Missouri Compromise," Nullification Crisis (when South Carolina attempted to secede from the Union)," "Compromise of 1850."
Answer: In the southern section of the United States, the terrain happened to be rich and abundant with nutrient soil, creating a perfect environment for agriculture. Within these communities, the southerners began to take advantage of this nourishing substrate as they primarily made a living off of goods that were sourced from farming, such as the crops of cotton and tobacco. Soon, the whole economy of the south was formed around their significant agricultural output, an output that would not have been possible at all, if not for the labor of slaves. Although agriculture was also abundant in the northern section of the United States, the terrains were rocky and after years of depletion to the rough soil, they were not quite rich enough to form an economy around. Rapidly, the economy of the north became industrial, meaning that they produced a number of raw materials that could not be obtained from any crop.
In southern daily life, it was normal for all members of the household, especially slaves, to work from sunrise to sunset, no matter what the weather. Men and teenage boys of the family held the responsibility of tending the livestock, chopping wood, plowing, and seeding the fields while also clearing the land of rocks, trees, and stumps. Whereas the women and older girls of the family carried out the tasks of cooking, cleaning, sewing, and mending as they also fed the chickens, milked the cows, grew vegetables, weaved cloth, and made candles, soap, butter, and cheese for the family household. Every day, the family of the farm would have to carry water from nearby streams or wells for the simple luxuries of washing and cooking. In many ways, southern life offered few material comforts for farm families, and much less for the lives of their slaves. Homes were only so big and they lacked insulation, indoor plumbing, and merely included the warmth of a kitchen stove. Even though the north seemed more technically advanced compared to the south, northerners also faced sanitary problems. Outhouses were polluting public and private wells, as everything from garbage to chamber pots had been emptied into the sidewalks, alleyways, and rivers. Daily life in the north consisted of hard industrial work, overpopulation, violence, filthy streets, and disease that was constantly being spread by contaminated water and vermin.
In the north and the south, agriculture and industry were equally influencing the way of life in the United States, but it was also beginning to shape their separate social attitudes, as well as their social structures. Families among the south actually believed that owning slaves was something that was essential to their liberty. Yet, in the northern states slavery was harshly looked down on, and for good reason. The north was usually “ free soil”, meaning that they supported the idea of wage labor over slavery. Another social attitude that was apparent within southern life was that the families often had many children because that would mean more helping hands on the farm. And where there was traditional schooling for these children, it was purposely scheduled around the agricultural season. As for clothing garments, southerner families would rarely wash their outfits more than once a week, obtained two sets at most and maybe a fancier one set aside for social occasions or church. Most farmers would even work barefoot for all but the coldest weather since factory-made shoes at the time only came in three sizes and proved to be dreadfully uncomfortable. Whereas in northern states, the family’s life and more importantly their children’s lives, were not so heavily based upon the careers of the household. As for social structures, the northern social structure was formed around the increasing merchant class, but in the south, the social structure was plainly based on whoever owned the largest plantation at the time.
I would confidently predict that the western section of the United States will first become a battleground between the northerners and the southerners, in a fight for who will influence the new land. Their religious beliefs and suspicions of one another will have to settle before development in the west progresses any further. Only then, do I believe that the west will finally develop into new land for agriculture and the villages will slowly give way to cities, growing into a righteous mix between southern and northern cultures. I predict that the west would be more likely to side with both regions, the north and the south on important issues, as the economy in the west will not only become agricultural but it will also become the birthplace of technological innovations. I presume that this will also be the creation of immense opportunity and things like slavery and lack of sanitation will become ideas that seem completely barbaric.
