As President, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to Senator John Breckinridge to gain support for his purchase of the Louisiana territory. In it, he likened the Legislature to a Guardian. It is my opinion that this analogy is sound.

The Louisiana Purchase:

  • Saw the U.S. acquire land from France in North America
  • Doubled American territory
  • Faced a constitutional controversy because there were arguments that the Constitution did not allow the Executive to purchase territory

Thomas Jefferson then wrote to the Senate Leader, John Breckinridge and explained that the Legislature should approve the purchase because they would be like guardians who engage in profitable ventures for the good of their wards.

This is a sound analogy because the Legislature is in many ways, the guardian of the United States because:

  • They pass laws to protect Americans
  • They approve the budget on which the nation depends
  • They evaluate the actions of the executive to ensure they are for the good of the people

In conclusion, Thomas Jefferson was right to say that Congress was analogous to guardian protecting a ward.
