Vicente and Carla each ran 8 laps around a track. They started at the same time and place. If Vicente ran 1.5 times as fast as Carla, how many laps did Carla have left to finish when Vicente finished his 8th lap?

The number of laps Carla have left to finish when Vicente finished his 8th lap is about 1.6laps

Let the number of laps ran by Vincente be x

Let the number of laps ran by Carla be y

Vicente and Carla each ran 8 laps around a track, then the total laps will be 16, hence:

x + y = 16 ............. 1

If Vicente ran 1.5 times as fast as Carla, then;

x = 1.5y .................. 2

Substitute 2 into 1

1.5y + y = 16

2.5y = 16

y = 16/2.5

y = 6.4

This means that  Carla would have run about 6.4laps.

Number of laps left for Carla to run = 8 - 6.4

Number of laps left for Carla to run = 1.6 laps

Hence the number of laps Carla have left to finish when Vicente finished his 8th lap is about 1.6laps
