In the late 1400s, the Ancestral Puebloan people of what is today the Four Corners Region of the U.S. Southwest suddenly vanished. For centuries, the culture—also known as the Anasazi—had grown maize and built elaborate villages and sandstone castles. Then, it was gone.
In the 1400s, the Anasazi or Puebloan Indians seemingly disappeared.
In the early 15th century, the Anasazi Indians who had established a civilization that historians say was on par with that of the Mayans, suddenly abandoned their settlements and migrated somewhere else.
Historians theorize that they did this because:
- drought
- poor sanitation, and,
- environmental degradation
Historians are still unsure why they left but they did conclude that the Anasazi basically disappeared from history when they moved.
