4. Chapter 1 "May 30, 1921"|
"A. J. Smitherman, editor of the weekly Tulsa Star, urged local blacks to arm themselves in response to the lynching of a black prisoner in the Oklahoma County
jail." (Tulsa 1921, p. 7) Was this a reasonable response to lynching? Why or why not?

Respuesta :

Calling on local blacks in Oklahoma County to arm themselves in order to prevent more lynching of blacks is not a reasonable response to lynching.

  • Principally, lynching is an extrajudicial public execution by a mob.  This informal mob violence is perpetrated to achieve some uncanny objectives, including:
  1. to punish some transgressors accused of wrongdoing
  2. to punish a legally convicted transgressor
  3. to intimidate other likely transgressors.

  • However, the process has been known to only generate further violence.  For example, if local blacks heed Smitherman's call and get themselves armed, the violence in Oklahoma County can only increase astronomically.

  • Though, one can excuse Smitherman, who is known to be passionate, fearless, and a vociferous advocate, taking to extreme measures to counteract an unfortunate incident does not appear to be the best response.

  • There should be a middle ground for social reconciliation with shared understanding.  Transgressors are always loathsome.  However, when we recall that we are all transgressors in one way or another, then, the understanding will sober unnecessary outbursts.

Thus, local Oklahoma blacks should never buy into this call, as arming oneself predisposes one to violence, and there will be unending lynching all over the County.
