The Grand Canyon began its formation about 5 my ago by the erosive action of the Colorado River. Its sedimentary layer composition reflects its history, keeping fossilized living forms that used to inhabit the area.

The Grand Canyon formation began approximately 5 million years ago, thanks to the erosive action of the Colorado River.

The strength of the colorado river caudal, together with deglaciation and humidity factors, began to cause an uncontrollable erosion process in these lands that were previously part of the sea bottom.

Originally many strata and sediments accumulated at the bottom of the ocean. With time these extensive areas were exposed when the Rocoses Mountains got formed by the end of the cretaceous (70 million years ago).

Now, by looking at the composing layers, it is possible to understand its formation.

The Grand Canyon is almost entirely composed of sedimentary rock.

It was formed while sediments of sand and mud got deposited in thick layers at the bottom of the ocean and got compacted through the pass of time until becoming a rock.  

Sedimentary rocks have been chronologically accumulating for years, reflecting the geological formation known as superposition.  

According to this sedimentary deposition, we can distinguish the older rocks located in the deepest areas from the younger rocks in more superficial layers.

Each layer keeps fossilized organisms that used to inhabit this area in the past.
