boy in the next illustration is the main character in the story.

The name of the boy is Tunke. He is about 7 years of age. Tunke is an orphan who lost his parents at the age of three years. After the death of his parents, he was left to live in this wooden house with his grandfather.

His uncles have refused to assist him in his education. Therefore, Tunke decided to help his grandfather in the farm in order to raise money for his education. He is left to struggle alone with his aged grandfather.
