At the beginning of The Giver, Jonas just does what he’s told. He is content with his life, but is surprised to become the next receiver. At the end of the novel, he is not content with his life because he learns what to do with old and ‘inferior humans’ (kill them) and how the world used to be. He is also overwhelmed with all of the memories and responsibilities that he now has. So then he escapes the world that he’s lived in for so long to ensure the safety of Gabriel.
