The mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, offered a pardon to thousands of people arrested in the city during the 1960s. They had been protesting laws established in the 1870s that discriminated against African Americans. Mayor Larry Langford announced the pardon in August 2009. Many people were arrested in Birmingham during civil rights protests. About 2,500 protestors went to jail in 1963 alone. They had been protesting peacefully, but they did not have an official permit. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was among them. The pardon will clear their names.
