A large popcorn bag holds four times as much as a small popcorn bag. At the end of a party,

3 1/3 small bags and 2 1/4 large bags were left.


a) How many small bags would the leftover popcorn fill?

Let small popcorn bag hold = p units popcorn. So, large popcorn bag hold 4 times ie 4p units popcorn.

So, total popcorn left = Sum( No. of popcorn in each bag x no of bags) =        [ 10 p / 3 ] +  [ (9 x 4) p / 4 ] = 10p / 3 + 9p  = (10p + 27p) / 3 = 37p / 3

A] Small bags for left popcorn = Total left popcorn / Per small bag popcorn  = ( 37p / 3 ) / (p)  = 37 / 3 = 12 1/3

B] Large bags for left popcorn = Total left popcorn / Per large bag popcorn   =  ( 37p / 3 ) / (4p) = 37 / 12 = 3 1/12
