Read the excerpt from President Lyndon Johnson's
speech in 1968

There is division in the American house now. There is
divisiveness among us all tonight. And holding the
trust that is mine, as President of all the people. I
cannot disregard the peril of the progress of the
American people and the hope and the prospect of
peace for all peoples, so I would ask all Americans
whatever their personal interest or concern to guard
against divisiveness and all of its ugly consequences.

Based on this excerpt, why did President Johnson
decide against seeking reelection?

President Johnson had decided against reelection because of the pressure and criticism he was receiving from the public. He didn't have any other political ambitions. Although the war was costing a lot, that wasn't the reason he didn't want to run for president for a second term. Also, he never had a son in the armed forces.

The answer is C: The country was too divided over the war.

I am 100% sure this is the correct answer.
