Our nation's highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, was posthumously awarded to Johnson in 2015. During World War I, the 369th Infantry Regiment was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Having completed a three-week training program with French forces, the 369th Brigade went into actual combat on April 15, 1918, hardly a month from the first major battle in the American Expeditionary Forces. It was the Hellfighters who participated in the French counterattack, in which the regiment lost 14 members, while 51 more sustained injuries.
