✅ Context: In 1841, when Solomon Northup was coaxed by "two gentlemen of respectable appearance" on his journey to Washington, D.C. for job, he had a free Black man living in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He was tortured and sold into slavery, though there he was said to be a fleeting slave by the captors. He served twelve years in Louisiana under three separate masters before being liberated – a feat that included smuggling a letter anonymously to his family to the governor of New York.
