When the Wehrmacht retreated from the Soviet advances they started executing people in the camps. In many cases, they were told not to waste the bullets so they did so by other methods. It was not common to see them moved further towards Germany at the end as they saw it as a waste of resources.
The nazis lead those who were still imprisoned to do something called the death marches. Here, the prisoners would walk for hours and hours till they died. If they ran away, they would be shot unless they escaped and blended with the general crowd. Some would die from disease and very few would make it. If I’m correct, 75% of the deaths of the Holocaust were during the death marches (not sure bout this fact).
