An infinitve is when the phrase "to be" is acting as the subject of the sentence, it is as if a verb becomes a noun or an adjective or even an adverb. Any word that is preceded by the word "to" is an infinitive.

the basic form of a verb, without an inflection binding it to a particular subject or tense (e.g., see in we came to see, let him see )
