Keeping in mind your respective course (HIST 1301 and/or HIST 1302), should statues of historical figures be removed if they were insensitive to a particular group in a given time period? Why/why not? Explain your reasoning.

Respuesta :

Absolutely not. They are important historical artifacts and represent important events. Although some of these events were not morally correct we can use it as a reminder to not repeat the past. Some of these statues are 100’s of years old. Almost no other countries destroy their historical statues due to “sensitivity”. Also keep in mind that erasing these statues would be equivalent to erasing our history and not giving any recognition to those groups of people that suffered.

History helps in understanding our past, examining our present, and creating a better future, thus historical figures should not be removed.

Study of History

The Study of History is based on study of past through the prism of present. Statues of historical figures are not for politics, but they are there to understand their life, their deeds and their Contribution in a society.

Even if the Contribution of that historical person is insensitive towards people, it is the duty of a Historian to write about them in a historical manner, because ignoring them will be like hiding bad things from history, which is ethically wrong.

Hence, historical figures should not be removed, because Statues are meant to make people remember the things done in past, and things which not to be repeated.
