Oceans did not exist on Earth nearly 4 billion years ago because water remained as a gas because the Earth was extremely hot. Crazy to think that now oceans cover 71% of the Earth's surface!!

4 billion years ago, the entire solar system was very hot especially the inner region. The water only existed as vapor. With time, as the Earth cooled down, the water started to condense. Today, 71% of the Earth is covered with water. The water is thought to be brought to earth by outer solar system. It is also thought that the oceans formed when the water vapor escaped from the molten rocks beneath the Earth which condensed when it started cooling down.
