Multicellularity is an exception to the characteristics of life.
CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE:
- Organisms are considered living only by the possession of certain characteristics that distinguish them as one. Some of the characteristics that makes up a living thing is:
- Reproduction: All living organisms must be able to procreate or produce young ones.
- Evolution: Living organisms must descend from existing organisms.
- Homeostasis: Living organisms must in one way or another regulate their internal conditions independently of external environment.
- Irritability: Living things respond to external and internal stimuli
- Respiration: Living things obtain energy by respiration.
- However, a living organism can either be unicellular (one cell) or multicellular (many cells). Multicellularity is not a characteristic of life.
