Cast of Characters
Martin
Dad
Coach Jovicic
Scene One
(The curtain rises on the living room in the Hiller household. Martin is lying on the couch.)
Martin: (moaning and holding his ankle) My season is over!
Dad: (placing a bag of ice on Martin’s ankle) Sure looks that way.
Martin: Aren’t you supposed to make me feel better?
Dad: Just being realistic, son. You certainly can’t play hockey with a sprained ankle.
Martin: We can just tape it up, right?
Dad: (shaking his head) And risk further injury? No way, kiddo.
Martin: (covering his face with his hands) Just when I was starting to score!
Dad: Instead of looking at this negatively, why don’t you take a different approach? Maybe this is your opportunity to work on strategy. You can help Coach Jovicic come up with plays and help your team.
Martin: Ugh, Dad. Why does everything have to be a lesson?
Dad: (laughing) It’s my job!
Martin: (sighing) Fine. I’ll ask Coach if I can be his assistant.
Scene Two
(The curtain rises on hockey players huddled around Martin, who is holding a white board and explaining positions and plays as he is drawing arrows. A buzzer sounds and the players skate onto the ice. Dad watches Martin from the stands.)
Martin: Let’s go, Lightning!
Coach Jovicic: (patting Martin on the shoulder) Nice play, Martin.
Martin: (smiling) Thanks, Coach. Just trying to help in any way that I can.
(Martin looks up in the stands to find Dad and smiles. The curtain falls.)
