Pfeiffer Beach, near Big Sur, California, is famous for its purple sand. Above the beach are the foothills of the Santa Lucia Range. Brainstorm the large and small processes that might have created the mountains and this spectacular beach.

The purple sand is from erosion that washes down the mountains when it rains.

Basically, the rock is on top of the sand, over time the rock wears away which is why you see the purple sand, thousands of years ago people would have only seen the rock on top of the sand
