Her main idea is that having just a single story about anything makes us have a limited view of it. Many personal experiences were used to illustrate this. They include;

1. When she was still a child, her thoughts about books and the characters in them, which she felt were mostly white. Learning about African books and African characters changed her thoughts.

2. Her thoughts about Fide the house-boy whom her family viewed only as poor. Learning that they were also creative changed her view about them.

3. Her roommate's view of Africans as not being exposed to any other culture. Learning that the author could use the stove, and had an album about Mariah Carey changed her view.

4. The author's view of Mexico as a place filled with people trying to cross the border was countered when she got to Mexico and saw people going about their normal activities.

The Danger of a Single Story shows the importance of having an all-round view of matters, people, and situations. A Single Story only provides a limited view. The author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie had so many experiences of adopting a single story of others and being reciprocated which such views about her and Africa by others.

The author spent her entire childhood reading books written by white European authors.
These authors wrote stories based on their reality, which was very different from the author's reality, who was African.
As the author only read stories written by a specific type of author, she began to see people and life in Africa based on the unique vision of these authors.
This made her not understand her own culture and the way of life and appearance of the people around her, which made her frustrated.
When she started reading books by African authors and other nationalities, her vision of the world and people became richer and more comprehensive.

With this, we can see that the author uses her life experiences to show that clinging to a single type of story, or hearing stories from only a group of people is not good, as it promotes limited reasoning and frustrated personal perception about life.
