Twice a number added to another number is 15. The sum of the two numbers is 11. Find the numbers. Write the numbers from least to greatest

Respuesta :

Answer:

4 and 7

Step-by-step explanation:

There are probably several ways to do this but this is how I did it:

First, I listed all the number combinations, that added together equaled 11.

This is what it looked like:

1, 10

2, 9

3, 8

4, 7

5, 6

6, 5

7, 4

I stopped here since the next step would be to double the first number and 8*2 would already be more than 15.

Then, I doubled the first number and added the second number to it, when I saw that didn't equal 15, I eliminated that possibility and moved on to the next set of numbers. When I reached 4, 7 I saw that 4*2 equaled 8 and 8 plus 7 equals 15 so I had the answer.

There are probably much more efficient ways to do this but this is how I did it.

Hope it helped!

The first number is 4 and second number is 7.

Let us consider that first number is x and second number is y.

            [tex]2x+y=15\\\\x+y=11[/tex]

Substitute [tex]y=11 - x[/tex]in equation [tex]2x+y=15[/tex]

        [tex]2x+11-x=15\\\\x=15-11=4[/tex]

So,   [tex]y=11-x=11-4=7[/tex]
