Old Imperialism

Between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, European powers generally did not acquire territory in Africa and Asia but instead established trading posts. The New World was exceptional as Spain and Portugal established colonies here.

In the nineteenth century Europeans began colonizing Africa and Asia and used military force to take over local governments driven by the search for new markets and raw materials. European powers exploited the local economies for raw materials necessary to accommodate Europe's growing industrial society.
