Gilman most likely chose an unreliable narrator to tell the story of "The Yellow Wallpaper" because it helps the reader understand that the narrator is not getting the help she needs.
Thus she used the unreliable narrator to show us such feelings and emotions of helplessness.

The novel, 'The Yellow Wallpaper was written by the American author Charlotte Perkins Gilman in 1892. The novel essentially shows the attitude of the society to women's health during that period, that is, in the 19th century. The story is a collection of the journal entries made by a woman artist, who is suffering from temporal nervous depression. The treatment administered to the sick woman include: eating well, exercising well and getting plenty of air. But it was obvious from the journal entries of the sick woman that these are not the appropriate treatment for the woman, for her condition was not improved by these treatments.
