Texas?
Benjamin Edwards was an Anglo-American who lived in Texas when it used to be with Mexico. Him and other people refused to follow their rules and created their own country "Fredonia" after he declared independence from Mexico. The Mexican army later on defeated the rebels and took back their land. That also caused them to be suspicious of the Anglo-Americans.
