How the cab driver had refused to take the cat along, and how Steve had forgotten to charge his phone, and so now they were walking all the way home . . . .

“And the heat,” Steve interrupted sarcastically, “don’t forget, it’s my fault that it’s hot out, too.” Ramon fell silent a moment, then sighed heavily—really, more of a growl than a sigh.

“You’re right, I apologize,” he mumbled. “And hey, at least you knew the right road to get us back home.”

“Yeah,” Steve said in a wavering voice, “I mean, probably . . . . This is almost probably definitely the right road.” He braced himself for another onslaught, but Ramon just laughed.

“Well it goes somewhere, anyway. Roads always do go somewhere.”
