A direct democracy is a democracy where the people vote directly for their leaders-- if the United States was a direct democracy, for example, Hillary Clinton would have been president in 2016 because she won the popular vote. A direct democracy is decided by the popular vote. Everyone gets an equal say in what's happening-- whether it's passing a law, or deciding who is the next leader. It is all chosen by the popular vote.
A representative democracy is pretty self-explanatory-- people vote for representatives who speak for them.
