HOW IS WATER POLAR?
- Water is a chemical compound made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom i.e. H2O. The hydrogen atoms are electropositive while the oxygen atom is electronegative.
- The electronegativity of the oxygen atom allows the positive hydrogen ions to be attracted towards it. This makes water molecules polar.
- Hydrogen bonds form when hydrogen ions (H+) are attracted to an electronegative ion like 02-, S2- etc. Hence, in the interaction of water molecules, the hydrogen ion of one water molecule gets attracted to the oxygen ion of another water molecule, hence, forming HYDROGEN BOND.
In a nutshell, hydrogen bonding is possible in water due to its polariry.
