The first of three numbers is one-third the value of second number. The second number is 5 less than the third number. If twice the third number is 5 less than the second number, which of the following equations could be used to find the value of the first number, if the first number is represented by x?

As per given we have,

First number = [tex]\dfrac13[/tex] of second number.    (i)

Second number = Third number - 5   (ii)

2 (third number)= Second number - 5   (iii)

Put  x= first number in (i).

so, [tex]x=\dfrac13[/tex] of second number.

⇒ second number =[tex]3\times x=3x[/tex]

From (ii)

[tex]3x=[/tex] Third number - 5

⇒ Third number =[tex]3x+5[/tex]

From (iii)

[tex]2(3x+5)=3x-2[/tex]  , required equation.
