during the 1880s-1890s Agricultural was going through a tough time and the large amount of Agricultural workers and farm owners felt like their needs weren't being met by the traditional parties. During these times up until ~1930 there was laissez faire capitalism which had little to no regulations on corporations and businesses which allowed small businesses and specifically farms to be taken advantage of by large corporations.
One main take away is that they wanted regulation of the railroads since they were being charged absurd rates to ship cattle any other products to be sold at markets
