The lakes can simply be divided into three zones, littoral, benthic, and limnetic zone.

The littoral zone is the one that is resembling the coastal zones of the oceans. It is the zone that is shallow, the closest to the shore, and where the sunlight can penetrate so that the plants are able to perform photosynthesis.

Like the oceanic coastal zones, the littoral zone of the lakes is either flattened, or has a very gradual fall.
