The Earth is around 4.5 billion years old and has been hosting living organisms for 3.7 billion years, when the first prokaryotes are thought to have evolved. As a result of atmospheric changes and other factors, single-cellular and multicellular eukaryotes came into existence. The history of life has been made easier to study with fossils, and there remain several hypotheses about the origins of life.
