Abby felt excited, but also nervous about opening the mail. My guess would be that the mail had some big news, like if she was getting into college. She was nervous to open the mail, as at the beginning she woke up earlier then usual with a knot in her stomach. She also did things throughout the day to distract her from opening the letter.
