The fact that they were right.

The colonisits ideas about the Britain really started to change after the British parliament implemented taxes on the American colonists without their consent. After the French and Indian War, the British government accumulated a massive amount of debt. In order to pay this debt off, the British government was going to implement taxes on the American colonists.

The colonists disliked this idea, as they had no representation in the British parliament. The colonists felt it was unfair and expressed their view with the famous phrase "no taxation without representation." This would be the beginning of the bad relationship between colonists and Britain.
