The Great Awakening saw people try to rededicate their lives to God but they believed that the best way to do so was to have a personal relationship with him as opposed to going through the Church all the time which was the standard practice.
The Enlightenment pushed for a new way of doing things such as:
- the Church would not have political power
- human beings would have such rights such as liberty, freedom and tolerance and,
- people would be able elect their own government.
In conclusion, both these movements therefore tried to go against the standard practices of the time and so questioned traditional authority.
