We factor binomials using difference of square formula.

What are binomials?

  • Binomials are polynomial that is sum of two terms.
  • For example, (x+3), (2x+7)

What is difference of square formula?

a²-b² = (a+b)(a-b)

we can prove this by

⇒(a+b)(a-b)=a(a-b)+b(a-b)

                 =a²-ab+ab-b²

                 =a²-b²

How do you factor binomials using difference of square formula ?

  • For example, x²-25

It is in the form a²-b² where a=x and b=5

∴ we can write x²-25=x²-5²

                                  =(x+5)(x-5)
